10 NLP Techniques to Boost Trust Immediately
Can NLP help build trust? Absolutely! and in a variety of ways.
Komal Talan, an NLP Master Practitioner, says: “People constantly assume I’m utilising NLP when I go to parties.” Unconsciously, I most likely do. Most individuals are aware that rapport development is covered by NLP once they have heard a little bit about it. Although it is one of the least “sexy” NLP methods available to me, I can see the appeal. Sadly, neither schools nor other institutions of learning teach us how to do this. (Except for in an NLP course.) Unfortunately, there is frequently resistance to or misunderstandings about the intentions behind the NLP tool for rapport-building. ”
The following are frequent causes of resistance to NLP’s rapport-building technique:
It is frequently used in the context of sales or as a means to “pick up” someone, which entails persuading someone to do something they do not necessarily want to.
People mistakenly believe that someone who deliberately promotes trust is unreliable.
Someone is likely to establish trust more readily than someone who was not nurtured by parents who were emotionally knowledgeable and effective communicators. They naturally establish trust because (often unknowingly) they are aware that the basis of any mutually rewarding connection must be trust.
Even though they have received training in trust-building techniques, it is sometimes impossible to trust them. It should not be assumed that everyone who wants to learn how to establish rapport is unreliable or has “ulterior intentions,” because this is not always the case. Genuinely, the vast majority of people who invest in our NLP training actually have honourable goals, such as being of service, improving their leadership skills, or simply becoming a happier, more balanced person with pleasant relationships.
It is possible to physically develop a relationship with someone by imitating their movements or even their breathing patterns. As an illustration, if they cross their right leg, you do the same.
The only difference between copying and mirroring is that you copy by making the mirror image. For instance, if they placed their left hand on their knee, you would do the same with your right hand.
Crossover mirroring occurs when you move one area of your body as you move another. For instance, you might tap your finger on the table if they tap their foot on the floor.
Utilizing someone else’s word choice is another strategy for “matching” and perfecting the capacity to win trust. Unconsciously, you are letting them know that you are using the same language. For instance, instead of saying “garbage bin,” you should use the phrase “trash can” if they do.
People use their hands to tell stories. We feel more like “we are the same” when we use the same style of hand “language.”
If you come across as caring and understanding, people will be more inclined to trust you. The most straightforward way to do this is to shift your focus from your own body to theirs. Think about what you might see, hear, and feel. Imagine what it would be like to live their life, and then your own. Ask yourself honestly if you could walk a mile in their shoes.
What feelings spring to mind when you trust someone? Security? Security?
Protection? Comfort? Relaxation? What about a relationship or trust in general? Stepping into these feelings first, and then actively communicating from that space, is a simple way to win someone over and earn their trust.
Imagine what you will see, hear, and feel when you have earned this trust. This is a simple strategy you may use to re-code your brain and use it more efficiently. Decide what is needed to get there based on that emotional state.
Although this isn’t specifically an NLP tool, it is in a sense. We feel happier when people smile at us. When grownups grin at us, even as babies, we reciprocate. People who smile and appear friendly tend to inspire more trust and a sense of connection in others.
Each of us has a rough and smooth conversational style. You cannot use the rough handle unless you first earn trust.Consider a person’s verbal and nonverbal cues while choosing a topic. When you feel you have established enough rapport, test out their rough handle while adhering to their smooth handle. Doing this is especially advised for coaches!
Pay close attention if someone divulges any of their unspoken “values,” which are really just their internal standards or guidelines for what is right or wrong for them. They usually aren’t aware of these, although they’re always:
Examples include liberation, intimacy, love, sincerity, acceptance, knowledge, wisdom, empowerment, productivity, and power.
Make sure you share their ideals and let that guide you in determining the kind of conversation they could enjoy. Don’t act in a way that goes against their principles.
Based on a person’s vocabulary, pay attention to their dominant system.
Terms like “see,” “look,” “bright,” “focus,” etc. are examples of visual words.
Terms like “hear,” “silence, “resonate, “noise, “chatter, etc. are examples of auditory words.
Rough, hard, soft, feeling, etc. are examples of kinesthetic terms.
Make sure you speak to them about their preference if it leans toward one or two of the three. For instance, you might use many visual words if someone else did. Then, you’d try to describe things using terms that correspond to the visual system as much as you can.
By compiling this article Komal Talan added, “Although this list of 10 methods is a wonderful starting point for quickly building trust with someone, you became aware of at least 10 additional ways that NLP is a very powerful tool for building trust.
